2. Introduction and Intent
This FAQ contains all information you need to know about Online CD stores
which deal with classical recordings. Since the question of which one
offers the best prices/bargains/selection, etc. comes up fairly frequently
in some newsgroups (particularly rec.music.classical.recordings) I have
decided to summarize the most salient details of each of the known stores
in this document.
As an added bonus, I have added the web URLs of all Classical Labels which
have a home page.

4. Search facilities
The following stores have search facilities:
- 1-800-Every-CD (current search is somewhat primitive,
but they are working on a better one)
- 1CD4U
- A&B Sound (1-field search engine; generally inadequate CD descriptions -
verify the provided catalogue number before ordering)
- Amazon.com
- Audio House Used CDs
- Berkshire Record Outlet
- CD Connection (2-field compound; only single-field for label,
catalog #)
- CD Europe
- CDNow/N2K (multi-parametric, no label or cat# fields)
- CD Universe (they have completely redesigned the search engine for classic=
al
music and it is now possible to search using the Schwann catalog numbers.
The direct URL for this is cdu2.cduniverse.com/asp/classical/main.asp)
- Classical Choice (extensive capabilities)
- Clean Record
- Crotchet
- German Music Express
- H&B Recordings Direct
- JPC Klassik
- Music Boulevard (multi-parametric, including catalog #; no
label field)
- TotalE
- Tower Records
The following stores have no searching available. Instead, you must browse
the catalogue and supply the label and number (or code) when you order:
- CD Selections
- MDT
------------------------------
5. CD prices and stock
++ 1-800-Every-CD ++
Among the lowest of all!
++ A&B Sound ++
Excellent prices but limited selection and very limited stock.
Out-of-stock titles take weeks to accumulate.
++ Amazon.com ++
Not very competitive. They have just started so perhaps they will
lower their prices as time goes by.
++ Arsnova ++
Their catalogue is updated monthly both on the web site and in their
mail list.
Once in a while they have good selection of CDs and LPs (for example,
33 CDs of Furtwangler made in Korea).
Half of their catalogue is for LPs.
++ Berkshire Record Outlet ++
Very reasonable prices.
Sometimes their offerings are insanely cheap, but the perception may
vary depending on what is been looked for. They mainly carry cutouts
and deletions (though not only them), so cheap prices is what you are
to expect from them generally.
++ CD Connection ++
Low. Generally slightly lower than MDT.
Stock seems to be good; in some cases when MDT reported a CD being
out of print, CDC was able to find it.
++ CD Selections ++
I have found this one to be very good in terms of prices. Great
bargains, such as Hildegard von Bingen double CDs on Deutsche Harmonia
Mundi for only 10 pounds Sterling. Naxos and Arte Nova CDs are all 4.99
pounds Sterling.
They don't have a huge range of recordings. They only carry
certain titles (hence the name CD Selections!). Their catalogue changes
at least once a month, so you want to check regularly and ask them for
availability before ordering.
++ CD Universe ++
Some readers have found that their price for Testament titles was better
by several dollars than any other site checked.
++ CD World ++
Excellent prices.
++ Classical Choice ++
According to some people they have been able to source out-of-print
titles. For this reason it is highly recommended.
Largest selection of used classical on the web. Stock changes and turns
over frequently. The used items provide not only the opportunity to pick
up bargains, but the ability to find recordings that are no longer
available. Also sells new CD's, including an extensive selection of
imports (Classical Choice acquired Serenade Records earlier in 1998).
Pricing for new items is competitive (Naxos prices are some of the best
around). Imports can be expensive, but reasonable given the market.
Imports directly from Europe and keeps a significant inventory of
imports in-stock, which allows them to deliver merchandise when the
larger Internet catalog houses remain back-ordered.
++ CyberMusic Surplus ++
Rather than mess with cut-outs at all, you might check CyberMusic Surplus=
,
the deleted title and overstock site for Allegro. All new, no punched
holes or cuts, some great titles at average prices of $7.99 a CD,
many less.
++ German Music Express ++
Higher prices but carry releases not available in the USA.
++ JPC Klassik ++
Generally higher than most the others.
However, they also have some cheap German CDs which otherwise might
be not easily available, for very little money.
++ MDT ++
Favourable. Generally 5-10% cheaper than most other UK vendors.
They carry releases not available in the USA.
++ Music Boulevard ++
Very competitive. Similar to EveryCD.
++ Tower Records ++
Similar to Amazon.com.
Michael Subotin and Randy Foster made a price comparison:

6. Shipping
Remember that sometimes huge amount of VAT and customs duties for orders
from the US might be charged. It is advisable to compare the prices of
European stores taking into consideration shipping and all the other
charges.
++ 1-800-Every-CD ++
USA: $3.00 for the first item, $0.50 for each additional item.
A multi-CD set is counted as one item.
They ship within two or three days so usually it is about a week
from order to delivery with ground service.
++ A&B Sound ++
Canada: C$5.75 flat rate
U.S.: C$5.75/0.5 kg (~ 1-4 CDs)
Other: C$5.75/0.25 kg (~ 1-2 CDs)
++ Ars Nova ++
Shipping: UPS 1-2 disc $4.00 (US only. $0.25 per additional disc).
US Mail: $5.00 Flat rate (US only, foreign rate according to weight).
For UPS, it usually takes less than 5 between the day of the order
and the delivery of the package.
++ Berkshire Record Outlet ++
Shipping in US is $4.00 for first CD, but only $0.10 per additional CD.
For box sets, multiply by the number of CDs in the set.
Minimum order is $15
++ CD Connection ++
$3.50; free for orders over $100.
When ordering 9 or fewer CDs from within Europe, they will be shipped
from the Netherlands.
If you want to order more than 9 CDs, it is preferable to place more
orders, none of them exceeding the number of 9 CDs.
The shipping charges are high if ordering less than about 5 CDs.
From 5 up they are fair, but still higher than MDT's: an average
between $3.47 and $2.83 per CD.
++ CDNow/N2K ++
$2.99 for the first item, and $0.99 for each of the next 2 items, up
to a MAXIMUM of $4.97 for a shipment.
++ CD Selections ++
There is a single fee of 2.65 Pound Sterling for Post and Packing.
UK Express service: 3 Pound Sterling.
Europe: add =A30.35 per CD.
Rest of the World: add 0.65 Pound Sterling per CD.
++ CD Universe ++
Shipping and Handling very reasonable at $3.75.
++ CD World ++
Postage is approx. $1 per disc.
++ Classical Choice ++
Postage in the U.S.: $2.50 for first 2 CD's, $.50 for each increment
of 2 thereafter. Multidisc sets count as multiple discs. Shipping is
free on orders of 20 CD's or more.
Sales tax is charged to Pennsylvania residents only.
International Shipping: we pass on the carrier costs directly, plus $1
for packing materials.
++ Crotchet ++

delivery note (=A31 per shipment) and free gift wrapping service

++ H&B Recordings Direct ++
Shipping in USA: $4.00 for first CD, $0.25 for each additional CD
up to a maximum of $12.00
Shipping abroad: it varies. For UK, $14.00 for first two CD's,
then $1.75 for each additional CD. Some other countries cost more,
some cost less.
++ JPC Klassik ++
They take 5.90 DM for handling + 15 DM shipping for orders below 100 DM;
over 100 DM no S/H charges. Note that they ship ONLY to the countries of
the European Union.
++ MDT ++
UK: add =A30.50 per CD Single orders of =A365.00 and over are postage

8. Overall recommendation and other info
++ 1-800-Every-CD ++
If you are addicted to CD buying (as many of us here clearly are), then
everycd.com can be a good deal. The occasional purchaser should go
elsewhere.
There is an annual membership fee of $40 (you can try them out for
30 days for free, though).
++ A&B Sound ++
Perhaps the best prices and worst service on the web. The agonisingly
slow service will frustrate the impulse buyer. The customer receives
track guides and few sound samples.
- H&B Direct listed 88(!) items for Alkan, but it turned out that their
listing was organized by piece, rather than by CD, so you got a lot of
repetition of the same CD at various places in the list. I guess you
would have to keep track yourself of which CD you wanted. There were 20
CDs for Hamelin (the actual count of CDs for Alkan was 33). No track
guides or sound samples or cover art.
I did not compare prices in detail; as I was looking for ease of search
and completeness, but it seemed to me that Music Boulevard was the most
expensive (very little off the "full" price). I have ordered from H&B
for years now (not online) and have been very happy with their service.
I did recently place an order from Amazon for a few CDs and can say that
their service is even better!
