Though Bruckner was never officially Mahler's teacher, these two composers
have always been historically and musically tied together. Alma Mahler once
recalled that, when Mahler brought his piano arrangements of Bruckner's 3rd
symphony to Burckner, Bruckner was full of naive delight and said with a
smile:
"Now I don't need the Schalk brothers anymore!"
(This story reminds me of how Klemperer truly impressed Mahler the first time
in Vienna in 1907 when he presented and played his piano arrangements of
Mahler's 2nd symphony...)
