About conducting.

German school: the orchestra plays after the beat given by the conductor.
           eg: Furtwangler, Walter, Boehm, and von Karajan; BPO and VPO.

Italian school: the orchestra plays on the beat.
                (So do American conductors and orchestras.)
            eg: Toscanini, De Sabata, Solti.
