That dry, raspy honking is called kennel cough for a reason: Dogs tend to get
it when they're kept in close contact. But your pup can catch the highly
contagious virus anywhere, even at the groomer. Most dogs recover in 7–10
days, but the vet may prescribe medication to prevent complications and ease
the inflammation. Here's what you can do to help Bowser feel better:
* Give him a steam treatment. Let him breathe the moist bathroom air
while you take a hot shower.
* Use a body harness instead of a correction collar that presses on his
windpipe.
* Ask the vet for a cough suppressant. Your pet -- and you -- will sleep
better.
