Tube Works Tube Driver

Debut: 1979

The Tube Driver has at least three distinctions: It was the first distortion

pedal to use a real tube, it was designed by a keyboard player (Brent Butler)

, and it was made famous by Eric Johnson (who used one straight into

 a Marshall for his lead sound). Severalversions of this box were made,

and the four-knob models built by Butler for Chandler are generally

considered the best.



全世界第一顆 tube effect 誕生在1979年....



但電晶體破音似乎在1963年就被發明了



叫做Maestro Fuzz-Tone


那個年代很愛FUZZ



像什麼..jimi hendrix 啦 SRV啦

他們都很愛用FUZZ

(但第一個破音的確是在真空管的音箱上 詳細年代不怎麼可考...1952~1963年之間)



Colorsound Overdriver

Debut: 1972

Boosted grind is the forte of this great-sounding, British-made overdrive.

Equipped with drive, treble, and bass controls, the Overdriver is ideal

for making even clean amps perform very dirty tricks—just ask Jeff Beck.



從這個玩意兒以及Jimi Hendrix 和 SRV 的fuzz來看

效果器的流行似乎是FUZZ→OVERDRIVE→DIS

(當然流行要跟著音樂走...)

FUZZ剛開始流行就很詭異




要了解STOMPBOXES的演進

語主流音樂托不了關係吧 (笑)

像1980年開始流行的Metallica 就跟mesa boogie的發明有很大的關係

( 似乎是那個時候開創了所謂的"重金屬?" 不是很了請版有糾正 )


『 the Overdriver is ideal for making even clean amps perform very dirty

   tricks just ask Jeff Beck.』

這句話聽起來 像是說這顆是第一顆overdrive pedal

如果我門用另一個角度解釋

"真空管音箱聲音到不了fuzz"

我們就可以解釋為何會有stompboxes破音的出現

因為音箱上做不到

(我曾經以為是 overdrive→dis→fuzz 因為1980才出現強而有力的metal 破音 )

但似乎是 音箱上的overdrive給了人靈感 發明了 fuzz

而以前沒有用tube做stompbox的原因

似乎是一直到1972年才有人想拿stompbox取代amp的


破音

(這樣也很合理的解釋 為何遲遲到1979年才有tube stompbox的出現 )

當時amp上的音箱比較偏向overdrive (因為能量不夠大到推更爆 一直到1980的mesa

boogie 這跟前級跟後級中間的整流器有很大的關係)



Arbiter Fuzz Face

Debut: 1966

You’d have to have been frozen in a glacier for the past 3,000 years to not

know about the Fuzz Face or the left-handed Strat player who made it famous.

Introduced in1966 by London’s Arbiter Music, the dynamic-sounding

Fuzz Face represents mankind’sbest use of two transistors, four resistors,

and three capacitors.



從上面我們可以知道

他只用了2個晶體放大器 4個電阻器 3個電容器

沒有像現在一樣精密的濾波處理

也就是當時的pedall effect的目的並非模仿amp上的overdrive

而是要開創不同的東西 所以才產生的fuzz tone



如同下面那篇的

Maestro Fuzz-Tone

Debut: 1963

As the first commercially available fuzzbox, this wedge-shaped device added

signature buzz to hundreds of ’60s-era country, pop, and rock recordings.

Based on a transistor circuit cooked up by a Nashville studio engineer,

the Fuzz-Tone kicked off the beginning of the stompbox revolution.

做的小結論

當時的stompbox跟現在的pedal effect 長的很像 製造方式也很像

似乎現代pedal effect是以前stompbox 的進化但 實際上概念是錯的

(而且其實兩個是一樣的東西 只是我拿來區分年代)

現代pedal effect以概念上來說 算是一種退化 又或是一種平民化

越高級的pedal effect (破音) 往往強調自己越像 rack 或是 head

高級的pedal effect (破音) 似乎永遠只能走在rack 跟head的後面

反觀 一些低階的pedal effect 跟最早的 stompbox 都更有自己的特色


對head 跟rack來說 是「無可取代」的



現代吉他英雄們靠著boss之流的pedal effect 創造許多驚為天人的玩意兒

這個概念就跟當初jimi hendrix用fuzz face的概念很像

『因為那是獨一無二的 在 amp 上找不到類似的玩意兒 ! 』



但我們現在呢 ?

由於我們沒有良好的amp供我們破音

我們必須在effect這關 就處理好所有的破音 與空間

amp只是給我們過clean而已



這兩個之間 可以說是用同樣的東西

(一樣都拿吉他 用效果器 接音箱 再讓聲音出來 )

但每一個東西扮演的腳色卻不一樣



steve vai的effect負責的 跟我的 effect負責的 角色

完全不一樣



所以千萬別再告訴我 steve vai 也是用boss

所以boss很棒很屌 不需要追求幾千破萬的effect



雖然都是effect 負責的卻不同 根本不能拿來比較 !
