Jazz titan Charlie Byrd, whose smooth, syncopated style helped establish
bossa nova and assorted tropical sounds as part of the jazz lexicon, died
on Thursday after a long battle with cancer. The guitarist, who was 74,
recorded extensively in the 1950s, but made his biggest impression on the
listening public in 1962 when he and sax giant Stan Gets collaborated on
Jazz Samba, an album that ranks with that decade's most influential. Byrd
continued mining that vein for much of his career, including his
well-received 1998 release My Inspiration - Music Of Brazil.
爵士樂巨人Charlie Byrd在長期與癌症病魔奮戰後，不幸於上周四病逝，得年74歲。
這位以其溫和平順、切分音式的音樂風格，協助BossaNova樂派建立、並將熱帶音樂風
情引入爵士樂語彙的吉他手，其大多數的專輯錄製於50年代，不過對於廣大樂迷而言，
印象最深刻的卻是他1962年與薩克斯風好手Stan Getz共同錄製的那張<<Jazz Samba>>
專輯。這張專輯推出後不僅深受歡迎，其所建立的風格更可稱得上是60年代最富影響力
的專輯之一。Charlie Byrd在往後的音樂生涯中也不斷地致力於此一樂風的發展之上（
