A young poet lay drunk
on a barroom floor
having drunk so much he could not
drink anymore
terrible visions they
broiled through his brain
he dreamed he was riding on a
hellbound train
it was an engine with murderous
blood it was damp
it was brilliantly lit with a
brimstone lamp
there was a demon for fuel
he was shoveling bones
while the furnaces rang
with a thousand groans
so they were riding
on a hellbound train

well the train rushed on
at an awful pace
the sulfur and fumes
scorched our hands and our face
and brighter and brighter the
lightning flashed
hotter and hotter
the air became
till our clothes were burnt
with each blinding flame
see we were riding on a
hellbound train

out of the distance
there rose a yell
ha ha said the devil
we're nearing hell
then oh how we passengers
all shrieked with pain
please mister devil won't
you please stop this train
but he just laughed at us
and he danced with glee
he laughed and he joked
at our misery
he said my faithful friends
you have done all my work
and never will the devil
a payday shirk
you have bullied the weak
you have robbed the poor
your starving brother
you've have turned
from the door
you have laid up gold
where the cancer rusts
you have given free rein
to your beastly lust
so now you're riding on a
hellbound train

and corruption avowed
