5. Song to America
Every man has a song he is singing
Or a song he is trying to sing
But the man who has chosen to sing his own song
Is the man who will sing like a king
For he don't dance to the tune of another
Or call the tune of another his hymn
And he's not about to crawl to the pilgrim
But the pilgrim is about to crawl to him
Every man has a place he is leaving
And a place he is trying to go
But the man who has chosen to take his own place
At the place he does not as yet know
He will drink from a cup that is heavy
But a cup that is filled to the brim
And he's not about to die in a prison cell
But a prison cell is about to die in him
Every man has a hole he is digging
And a hole he is trying to fill
But the man who has chosen to live his own dream
Is the man with the dream that is still
For although he has sacrificed nothing
He has nothing to sacrifice him
And he's not about to trade for eternity
But eternity is about to trade for him
Every man has a love that is dying
And a love that is coming to birth
But the man who has chosen to lead his own love
To four corners of the earth
He will stare through the masks of creation
Down a road with no horizon but him
Cause he's not committing suicide in America
But America's committing suicide in him
