Mood stabilizing agents are the mainstays of treatment
for acute manic episodes. More recently, studies have
found that atypical antipsychotic agents are effective as
monotherapy and adjunct therapy for acute mania, although
there is concern about associated metabolic side effects [4].
First-line therapeutic medications for acute mania are
lithium, carbamazepine, valproate, or an atypical antipsychotic [3].
