Christopher Walken Kevin Kline Cuba Gooding Jr. Alan Arkin Joel Grey Arkin: “Actor’s actor:” This is a term that describes someone who continuously pushes himself and his art deeper and deeper with little fanfare and the driving commitment to the truth. Or if we put it more simply: Philip Seymour Hoffman. In “Doubt,” Philip plays Father Flynn, a role that requires the audience constantly question what is true and what’s not true. Fortunately for us, Philip, your commitment to the truth in every moment keeps us exactly where we should be: unsettled, unsure, and enthralled on our uncertainty. For that, again this year, we sing your praises. Grey: Last year’s winner of this award won for traipsing through the desert on a demonic path to shoot and kill our next nominee. So there is a certain justice in speaking tonight about Josh Brolin’s brilliant work in “Milk.” Actors have been known to look for roles that show they are strong and morally tough, but this Dan White, Josh, you took on a role of someone who acts out of fear and weakness. That’s reminding us that we must replace fear with understanding and turn weakness into strength. Boy, you really nailed it. Gooding Jr.: Well, I agree with everything that has been said so far. Absolutely! Now let’s talk about taking risks, shall we? Robert Downey Jr. this year with “Iron Man” and this nominated strokes of genius in “Tropic Thunder,” you put yourself back among the boldest and best actors working today. To be a white actor playing a white Australian actor playing a black man in black face, I’ll say, “Are you out of your mind.” I mean, you know I can understand that you need the character for the art and the character for the soul, but that’s enough for taking the parts from those black people, man. Brothers need to work! You know, that’s enough for that. I’ll appreciate it. Yes, congratulations on your nomination and your upcoming production on principal photography of your new film, “Shaft.” (The leading role is a black man.) Walken: Michael Shannon is a wonderful actor and has been so in many movies of the last decade. In “Revolutionary Road,” he got everyone’s attention for sure by a man with no filter between what he thinks and what he says. Every actor aims for the truth in their work. And playing a character who reveals what’s unsaid beneath the conventional exterior, Michael, you are right on target. Well done. Kline: In a year of striking film images, perhaps the most unforgettable was that a man with his face smeared in clown makeup, lively sticking his head out of a speeding car relishing the night wind and reveling in the chaos he has unleashed on the streets of Gotham city. Menacing, mercurial, droll and diabolical, Heath Ledger, as the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” kept us all on edge, anxious to see what act of appalling misery he might commit next. With this virile performance as well as a wide range of other roles to which he put his unique signature, Heath Ledger has left us an original and enduring legacy.
