SSE是在1982年時由14為科學家和學者成立的非營利組織，其主題是關
於當前科學的非主流或是邊緣的領域，例如超自然、意識、外星生命等。
現在，該協會有800多名會員來自45個不同的國家。自從1992年，SSE
並會每年於美國舉行研討會；自從1987年，每兩年在歐洲舉行研討會。
SSE所發行的期刊每季出刊一次，線上可閱讀從1987到2004年的論文。
