新聞★Shoot me? I still won't say sorry 96/5/16 Being blunt cost Taiwanese singer Yang Pei An other jobs, but he vows he won't change... that much By Wendy Teo May 16, 2007 IT is probably just as well that Taiwanese singer Yang Pei An finally landed his first recording deal at the ripe old age of 35. For, after a decade of singing at pubs, he was so disillusioned by pandering to the patrons' song requests that he was starting to pick fights with them. Speaking to The New Paper during his promotional trip here last Friday, Pei An recalled how he nearly came to blows with one drunk patron. The man was hugging everyone in the pub, including complete strangers. 'Nobody dared to stand up to him because he was drunk,' said Pei An. 'So I spoke into my microphone and told him to stop making a nuisance of himself.' MOCKED HIM The man was furious at being publicly humiliated and confronted PeiAn, demanding that the entertainer sing the songs he requested. 'Because he was drunk, he wrote one of the words wrongly. I knew what he meant, but I deliberately mocked his grasp of the language. 'He was so angry that he reached into his shirt and yelled that he was going to shoot me.' Pei An had no idea whether the man had a gun or not, but stubbornly refused to apologise. In the end, the man's friend ended the confrontation by dragging him away. Pei An admitted: 'I think my band (at the pub) and my boss were actually relieved when I quit. I had so much frustration festering inside me that I was being a brat.' For a year after he quit the pub, PeiAn became an event manager of sorts, coordinating gigs for other acts. Unfortunately, his blunt nature meant that career move also went nowhere. 'I was very adamant about the way I did business - 60per cent of my deals fell through because I refused to compromise.' Luckily for Pei An, he bumped into an old friend in a hotel lobby about this time. The friend was now working as a music producer and asked Pei An to submit a demo tape. After hearing it, his friend's boss signed on Pei An immediately - without even asking about his looks or his age. 'When I was younger, I dreamt of cutting albums. But after numerous rejections, I thought I was never going to be accepted as a mainstream singer because I was neither good-looking nor very talented musically. 'I only know how to sing, honestly. I don't have any formal music training, I can't read notes, I can't play any instrument at all. 'All I have is my voice.' By then, after seeing his peers - VanFan, Julia Pang and rock band Shin - land recording deals one after the other, Pei An's hopes had dimmed. 'I had met a lot of recording company bigwigs during my pub singing career, but none of them have ever contacted me with an offer.' He thought he would never stand a chance until that fateful reunion with his well-connected old pal nearly two years ago. He hasn't looked back since. Pei An has been likened to late singer Chang Yusheng and boasts an impressive three-octave vocal range. Such power pipes have also led to him being nicknamed Iron Lungs by the Taiwanese media. His debut album, Me At 2.30am, lasted 19 weeks on the Taiwanese sales charts, while his second album, Yang Pei An II, made it into the HMV Top Ten here in less than a week. Despite his unexpected success, PeiAn says he's still very much his stubborn old self. He still drives around in his 20-year-old second-hand car. 'This is what I can afford within my current means - what's wrong with it? I certainly don't want to be keeping up appearances just for the sake of it.' PRICKLY But one concession he has since made is to rein in his hot temper. Acknowledging that a prickly nature can kill a career in showbiz, Pei An said: 'I can be tactful if I want to... Ultimately, I still cannot betray myself.' His debut album topped the charts in Taiwan for 19 weeks, but Pei An still drives a 20-year-old second-hand car. (SINGAPORE-THE ELECTRIC NEW PAPER) ps:翻得不好,請多見諒!
