Eight o’clock at night --Sitor Situmorang, translated by Harry Aveling For Francoise I have dreamed of you coming from a far country and waited year after year for your letters. Nothing. And now you’re here, like some faithful lover from an old legend. Having crossed the seas and mountains, flying from one continent to another, come as a friend and lover, fit for Prince Arjuna himself. I have dreamed of you coming, having convinced the whole world that two human beings from two different continents and two different worlds need to see each other across iron bars for a few minutes. I have dreamed of it all, with my whole heart, breaking the distance between our skies and the millions of years which divide us, as our eyes meet. Suddenly, the guard passes, jangling his keys as he routinely checks the cell doors, and I am awake again. The sound tells me that it is eight o’clock at night, on this side of the world. What time is it in Europe? What are you doing In Paris?
