死別一復生，濱水再徘徊，
斑駁深如海，常變每重來。
自悲身須臾，莫怪此情哀，
逝者得其靜，煙直上高台。
億我沙丘側，呼名入君懷。
If there is any life when death is over,
These tawny beaches will know much of me,
I shall come back, as constant and as changeful
As the unchanging, many-colored sea.
If life was small, if it has made me scornful,
Forgive me; I shall straighten like a flame
In the great calm of death, and if you want me
Stand on the sea-ward dunes and call my name.
[後記]
一九七一年六月十八日，我在警備總部不見天日的牢房裡獨居，想到莎拉˙替滋代爾這首
詩，我用一小時把它譯成，就是上面這首。
莎拉˙替滋代爾是美國浪漫派女詩人。她在我出生前兩年(一九三三)死去，是自殺的，活
了四十九歲。「火焰與陰影」是她三十六歲(一九二零)出版的。我譯這首詩的時候，正三
十六歲，如今我也快四十九了。因為這首譯詩是我「台北蒙難」時殘存的作品，對我有特
別的意義，所以我特別為它寫了這篇襯托性的文字。
