莎士比亞劇本「隨你歡喜」(As You Like It)第五幕中有兩首詩，第一首是---


   Under the greenwood tree
   Who loves to lie with me,
   And turn his merry note
   Unto the sweet bird's throat,
   Come hither, come hither, come hither.
   Here shall he see
   No enemy
   But winter and rough weather.


第二首是---


   Who doth ambition shum,
   And loves to livei' the sun,
   Seeking the food he eats,
   And pleased with what he gets,
   Come hither, come hither, come hither.
   Here shall he see
   No enemy
   But winter and rough weather.



一九七二年四月八日，我在警備總司令部軍法處獄中，曾把它們意譯如下：




   此處音宛轉
   人聲和鳥聲
   仇敵都不見
   除卻一寒冬

   煦煦春陽下
   名利一場空
   覓食欣所遇
   知足任西東
   仇敵都不見
   除卻一寒冬




這兩首詩的意境，頗為悠閒超邁。我譯它們的時候，既無「綠樹蔭蔭」，也無「煦煦春陽
」，但我在牢裡，的確有了「仇敵都不見」的清靜。只是牢裡的冬天很冷，我可以不見「
仇敵」，但卻無法不見「寒冬」，在「寒冬」來的時候，為了禦寒，每天晚上，我要在陰
暗的燈光裡，咿啞的地板上，不斷來回走著，邊走邊背書，經常兩三小時。我之能背書、
能走路，都拜坐牢之賜，坐牢對強者說來，真不是壞事。
