Yes, why poetry? There are so many different genres of writings, prose,
drama, fiction, etc; why poetry particularly? Why do one would like to
read something that so little people read, write something that always
makes no profit?
This is a question as difficult as why one wants to write. But it does
not matter if one can answer the question, since there are so many ques-
tions we fail to answer throughout this life, which is to a certain extent
a fumbling through darkness. Maybe poetry-reading or -writing, as Joyce
Carol Oates says, like the desire of human in listening to and telling
stories remain a mystery.
To me, poetry speaks the insights in a concise way, pinpointing sharply
a slice of experience. When a poem speaks, it not only speaks the ideas, but
also articulates the rhythms and rhymes, which shake the ears, the lips, the
body, and the heart. It trembles our physical existence, and our spirits,
our minds. That's why I love poetry.
