Wife of Bath(Cantebury Tale)
: It is not a stupid question. :)
: The lines of poetry recited weren't Plath. They were Shakespeare.
: I personally find it incredible (and difficult) for any poet to recite
: his own verses at such speed, unless he is conceited enough to make a
: serious effort. I can recite a few Shakespeares and Eliots, but none
: of my own.
: The scene was trying to depict the competitiveness (and perhaps
: elitism?) among Cambridge students, which would ultimately affect
: Plath's relation with Hughes: as wife and husband, as woman and man,
: as American and English, and of course, as fellow poets.
: I suppose those recitals did have positive effects on their poetry
: writing. After all -- those who write, read. But I, too, suspect
: that they served primarily as entertainment and competition, not
: self-improvement.

"You can hardly say 'incarnadine' without one or
more of your auditors thinking of a particular
line of verse." -- Ezra Pound, "ABC of Reading"

Open House,
而 The ABC of Reading 則是 1934 年的書。
Whence is that knocking?
How is't with me, when every noise appals me?
What hands are here? ha! they pluck out mine eyes.
Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood
Clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather
The multitudinous seas in incarnadine,
Making the green one red.
