I got many problems now, pff. Can anyone explain the general ideas of the following 3 peoms for me? 1. My Heart Leaps Up My heart leaps up when I behold A rainbow in the sky: So was it when my life began: So is it now I am a man: So be it when I shall grow old, Or let me die! The Child is father of the Man; And I could wish my days to be Bound each to each by natural peity. 2. When You Are Old When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. 3. The Eagle He clasps the crag with crooked hands; Close to the sun in lonely lands, Ringed with the azure world, he stands. The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls. Re: can anyone do me a favor? 時間: Wed May 29 12:31:20 2002 ※ 引述《mauvaise (煩死了)》之銘言: : I got many problems now, pff. : Can anyone explain the general ideas of the following 3 peoms for me? : 1. My Heart Leaps Up : My heart leaps up when I behold : A rainbow in the sky: : So was it when my life began: : So is it now I am a man: : So be it when I shall grow old, : Or let me die! : The Child is father of the Man; : And I could wish my days to be : Bound each to each by natural peity. Rousseau and Wordsworth) Children know more than the adults. Children are closer to nature and purer and they represent more the essence of human beings. That is, they are closer to the truth. "The Child is father of the Man" : 2. When You Are Old : When you are old and grey and full of sleep, : And nodding by the fire, take down this book, : And slowly read, and dream of the soft look : Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; : How many loved your moments of glad grace, : And loved your beauty with love false or true, : But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, : And loved the sorrows of your changing face; : And bending down beside the glowing bars, : Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled : And paced upon the mountains overhead : And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. : 3. The Eagle : He clasps the crag with crooked hands; : Close to the sun in lonely lands, : Ringed with the azure world, he stands. : The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; : He watches from his mountain walls, : And like a thunderbolt he falls. Re: can anyone do me a favor? That is, the use of "crooked" connotes the possible meaning of "fall" as depravity. However, it is also true that "fall" is not restricted to the fall of Lucifer or Adam. After I consulted my English literature teacher, he said "it is not neccessary that "fall" is related to the depravity of "Lucifer" or "Adam. If we want to justify this point, we have to do research on more Tennyson's poems." But it is noticeable that "fall" interpreted as related to "depraved" is supported by lots of professors in literature in my department. In conclusion, I'm not trying to definitely relate "fall" to the fall of Lucifer or Adam. But the case is that "fall" does denoate the meaning of depravity. That is, we seem not to have to resort to the Bible to infer the meaning of "fall" as "depravity." It seems a natural interpretation if we look closely at literally meanings. By the way, in this poem, personification is one key figure of speech. Since Tennyson personified the eagle, the depravity of human beings or someone (maybe he was referring to someone) might be analogous to the eagle. Re: can anyone do me a favor? He clasps / he stands / He watches / he falls. Re: can anyone do me a favor? He clasps / he stands / He watches / he falls. Re: can anyone do me a favor? Re: can anyone do me a favor? He clasps / he stands / He watches / he falls. Re: can anyone do me a favor? He clasps / he stands / He watches / he falls. Re: can anyone do me a favor? Re: can anyone do me a favor?
