我在noton anthology的english literature裡面讀到
Restoration時代一段討論versification的東西，想問一下到底什麼是
pentameter?書裡還附了一段SIt John Denham's "Cooper's Hill"裡面的句子做例子
，但是我也看不懂。所以想請大家幫忙。
Pope's couplets, in rhymed iambic pentameter, typically present a complete
statement, closed by a punctuation mark. WHithin the binary system of these
two lines, as in a digital computer, a world of distinctions can be compressed.
The second line of the couplet might closely parallel the first in structure
and meaning, for instance, or the two lines might antithetically play against
each other.(pentameter到底是什麼?字典上寫"五音步詩行"，是說一首有五句的詩體嗎
，那如果是5句的話，怎麼分成couplet呢?因為一個couplet不是有兩句嗎?)
Similarly, because normally the length of a pentameter line requires a slight
pause called a "caesure"("Know then thyself, presume not God to scan"
為什麼要舉這個例子?), one part of the line can be made parallel with or
antithetical to the other or even to one part of the following line.
Sir John Denham's Cooper's Hill includes a passaga, quoted and parodied for
many years, that illustrates these effects. The poem addresses the Thames
and builds up a witty comparison between the flow of a river and the flow of
verse

O could I flow like thee,│and make thy stream
Parallelism: My great example,│as it is my theme!
Double balance: Though deep, yet clear,│though gentle, yet not dull
Double balance:Stong without rage,│without o'erflowing,full

penta=five meter就是音步
音步有很多種such as iamb, dactyl, trochee, anapest, spondee, 精華區裡面應該有
所以pent-meter就是由五個音步所組成的詩行(就是一個verse)
iambic pentameter couplet就是所謂的英雄雙行體
Chaucer寫Canterbury Tales用的就是英雄雙行體
Edmund Waller adn Sir John Denhem set the versification
Pope集其大成
就如Johnson所說的, Pope在這方面技巧已經到了一種在多做增損變化都無法
使英雄雙行體更加完美, 這是他對波譜的讚美 但也是他的個人文學批評上的偏見
(就寬容的角度來看, Johnson的批評不受現代文學批評枷鎖接受)

"presume not God to scan"剛好6個
在唸完前半的時候 我們都會稍作停頓 這就叫做caesure
這樣的caesure可能出現在第四個或第六個音節
端看作者如何應用他的技巧

"flow like thee " and "make thy stream"剛好相呼應
"example" is parallel to "theme"
deep/clear is antithetic to gentle/dull
大概是這樣子
總之這首詩只是拿來舉音韻跟詩意之間的配合恰到好處
聲音相對稱的地方 就是詩意產生平行或者是對比的地方
Pope洽是長於此到的人
奇作品such as An Essay on Man, An Essay on Criticism, The Rape of Lock
都是用此體寫ㄉ :)
