"The sea and the tides, the sunrises and sunsets, and the chance to consider life in a small place . . . should be enough to keep the dreamers coming." ----P. F. Kluge, from "Oceans & Isles" ("Through the Lens: National Geographic Greatest Pictures") The salty seawind laps at my face, waking me to a brand-new glorious sunrise, rays of light prodding me up to grab my spear and catch breakfast. Fish scales play with the newcome sun, showcasing pristine the clear stream, frolicking gaily, unaware of the metal glint right before I stab, and pierce. Over a month-old impromptu campfire, I think how hand-caught fish are much the tastier. And with the stomach's cries of hunger sated, the endless sandline beckons to my feet, calling out for the massage that only my toes can provide; the waves roll on, oblivious to an islander's gaze, a gaze of wonder, growing only more wondrous with each new, remarkable day. Is there anything as boundless as the great, mighty sea? Show it to me, and I will call you the wiser: Even the sun must give in once a day to that swimming pool of the heavens, waves rolling forever. Nor could Galileo see the New World across Poseidon's sky, but he was no fool, and did not try. Shrill caws draw my eyes to the sky, where a flock of seagulls find themselves behind schedule, just preying for breakfast while I've already started the day. I watch as they circle high, then swoop and dive into the green; some come up happy, the others queue again. I find the slowest hunter of the bunch, and with an arrow, turn it into lunch.
