As say those pious men in shaking tone,
That sinners pay for what they've done in Hell.
The rack sets to strip them of flesh and bone;
Into dark Fire the bare souls fall as well.
Or sing those pious men in soaring glee:
The innocent rejoices in Paradise,
And praises the Almighty who sets them free,
For they've paid in life the good and kind price.
So a thief who falters for fear of Fire,
And a fiend who repents for joys in Heaven
Are deemed as good men for we to aspire!
What convenient belief! What smart bargain!
I say I stand on my sole and sheer heart,
Not Heaven nor Hell---such fictional art!
