Now I gaze at his savage countenance: Coarse surface, gross hair, a pair of dull eyes, In a distorted mirror, where he lies In the air of baseness and ignorance. So I ask: "What sort of desperate chance Thou deemst thou ownst to toss the fatal dice Of love?" And in a blast he painfully cries--- The fierce fire of shame puts on a dire dance, Trapping him in ceaseless torment, whose frame Begins to dissolve, diffuse, dissipate;* The dread pyre consumes all in ash and dirt, But a heart remains, without ruth nor hate, Fine and firm in the core; I shall not blame His transgression, for I know: it doth hurt. *from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Biographia Literaria -- Amor vincit omnia.
