So did I this white envelope unfold
With my shaking hands and faint-beating heart
The lovely replying lines to behold:
Would Fate smile on me or from me depart?
"Dear Amadeus" was the initial part.
"Dear" she called me! O heavenly address!
So cheap a mark pierced me as Eros' dart!
Downward my eyes moved in full-loaded stress,
To find the cruel sentence of "no" or "yes,"
But nothing was there save a lukewarm thank
That led to the most common ending bless,
So I sighed at this leaf truly blank:
Dear Love, do not wish me happy to be,
For my happiness is decided by thee.
