I went to the glaciers and wished to find the breaking sky with
The Northern Lights; ten thousand miles have I traversed,
From pole to pole,
On a rocketing train of Time
The Great White I saw bewildered me,
Recording the last vestige of the Big Bang
It said nothing to me.
To the stygian river I then came upon Hades,
The soul of the deceased and the reborn, here to part,
How death has undone so many,
The limbo where we cling
Once I saw an old man beside the sea,
Telling and retelling his tales on the stormy blue
Of the ominous bird that augured, he killed,
Paying the relentless debt of Love miscarried
Who to punish and whose task to bear?
Sisyphus’s rock of return or Prometheus’s feast of liver
Under the overpowering burnt of self-consciousness,
They attempt, as knowing the failure to come,
Failure that becomes their poetry of signature
Becomes us, the trillions painting their wills
Into the flaming sky
