1. Guilt rankles you before sleep
   And pain is that which tugs
   When you're awake.
   Every line of dialogue,
   A chipping of the dry-caked heart,
   A pestling of the earth
   To spout fountains of green frond blood.


2. The face wanders,
   Lost by the sea.
   The words of a former lover
   Are gusts of ill-tempered wind
   Spit onto the calloused skin.
   The draft chills,
   But the sand core is warm,
   The touch hauntingly serrate.


3. I think of you as dead,
   Safely encased in a cell-like grave.
   Your tombstone a heavy door
   For wreaths to adorn,
   But no keyhole to manipulate.

   In truth, you are still alive.
   Acquitted and resurrected
   In the sunlight,
   You bear the same murderous face,
   A face that killed itself
   And reincarnated
   To question my stranger gaze.


4. Memories of our past life together -
   You left them
   Folded neatly into a bundle,
   Hanging on a slender bough
   Of a tree
   By the riverside of Lethe.

   And now you've forgotten which tree.


5. To answer your question of love:
   Yes, I did,
   Or no, I never would.
   The past will eventually be
   Peeled off like a husk
   For the present to be solemnly reaped,
   The future, somewhat edible.
