It's the dead of night,
(to use a cliche)
and you turn out the light
(as many of us may).

You crawl into bed
(don't sleep on the floor!)
then pull blanket over head
(like the night before).

And then you hear it: THUMP! THUMP!

You're puzzled by this noise
(in truth I'd be too)
and stare at your stuffed toys
(they know less than you).

What on Earth could make it?
(are you sure it's from Earth?)
The suspense----you can't take it!
(your shaking's not mirth)

You hear it again: THUMP! THUMP!

Time to take action
(you're not being practical)
though your courage is in fractions
(not mathematical).

You rise and walk tiptoe
(damn the floor's cold!)
to the crowbar near the window
(that's rusty and old).

A third time it sounds: THUMP! THUMP!

You move to the door
(where else would you go?)
till there's distance no more
(between you and the foe).

The fear makes your heart sob;
(excellent metaphor!)
you turn the doorknob
