Lear: No, no, no life!
Why should a dog, a horse, a rat, have life,
And thou no breath at all?
King Lear, V.iii.305-07
No, the king does not see
That his beloved Cordelia has become a chair,
A table, a pair of shoes, a computer screen,
A sperm, an egg, a cadaver,
A coffin, its nails, the covering dirt,
And all the dust of this and every other universe:
The pathways beneath our feet,
The airways above our head,
And every which way in between
Are all inanimate, unalive.
The stars, they pulse lacking breath;
The sea, it ebbs and flows without heart:
This is how the world is,
This is the natural state of things:
Dead. The world is dead.
So what are we, we that live and breathe,
That run and fly and jump and sigh,
That are created intelligent, energetic, animate?
We stand alone among this world,
Amidst its death and dust and dead;
We are the sole ensign of death's contractor,
The precious element of existence that we call: life.
Precious it is, rarity surrounded by nought,
This living force that endows you:
Take it, grasp it in hand, wield it!
It is yours for a time, but for a short while:
It challenges you:
Begin. Go use your life. Now.
