So many poets, so many poems. Even more poems
deleted instead of published. I wonder
what beautiful works might we arrive at if
we mix and match lines from poems that never were?
What do deleted poems say? Do they
sing of a love that should have been unhappy
but turned out okay? Are there sunsets
mistaken for sunrises, swimming pools written into seas?
Does one person's name morph into another, and another, and another, and another, only to change
back into the first? What hollow sighs and grunts and farts
pollute the air of the nether poetic realm?
What lofty rhetoric and wrongheaded dreams crowd the space of poems nevermore?
And the most searching question of all:
Would you have asked these questions if
this poem were deleted?
