I was waiting when you came in,
vinyl record playing, wine just poured,
finishing the pages of a half-read novel.
Forty years of memories distilled
into this one slice of time. You came in,
took off your galoshes near the front door,
hung your coat, dropped your bag,
and found me in my wicker chair.
There are three things in my life
I will never forget. One: The time
you christened our new hearth rug with your tears.
Two: Blowing out all those damn birthday candles.
Three: Opening that long-awaited letter,
basking in the joy of infinite possibilities
not yet dwindled with reading to one.
Like a guitar strummed too slow,
you circled around the counter,
winding your way through the stacks of books
that populate the air, and
you move closer, closer ever closer.
The record stops.
