Before the end of this year, I want to write something about SP's lastest
album MCIS(Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness). Hope it's not too late.
MCIS is a double album- Dawn to Dusk & Twilight to Starlight. All twenty
eight songs are written by Billy Corgan expect "take me down" by james Iha
and "farewell and goodnight" by Iha and Billy.
Mellon Collie =? melancholy
Some said when I'm repeating the word 'melancholy' it sound pretty much the
same as Mellon Collie. What do you think? (good imagination)
This double album has wide variety including soft tunes like thirty-three,
1979, thru the eyes of ruby, beautiful... and hard rock songs like jellybelly,
X.Y.U., where boys fear to tread....
The first song in Dawn to Dust playing only with piano and organ really
surprised me and the 2nd song "tonight tonight" with orchestral monolith
style hit me again. I can feel SP goes POP here. The fame of Sp is starting
to go th their heads. (I hate my favorite bands starting becoming all image-
oriented.)
Billy is a good song writer. To go from hard rock song like "where boys fear
to tread" to the foofy song "we only come out at night", versatility shows
his abilities. In all of these songs, I like "bullet w/ butterfly wings" most.
It's very intense, funny. You can feel their heart here when they keep on
screaming "depite all the rage, we are still just a rat in a cage".
For the othere songs, "porcellina of the vast oceans", an ambitious
nine-minute epic, tempers dreamy guitar with Iha's grunge nastiness.
"love" is Sonic Youthish to me. "Tales of scorched earth" is evil, extremely
criminal. "1979" is another DJ favorited song. I like it, too.
In all SP's releases, I still like "Siamese Dream" most. MCIS doen't change
much of their style, but you can feel they do lots of effort on it. It's a
good try but if they put them in a single disc, this would have been much
better. Comparing to Nirvana or Pearl Jam, SP sure can't compete with them,
but for the no talent groups (Bush, GreenDay, Silverchair, etc), I quote what
Billy said in the interview with CMJ -- It's nothing to get your dick hard
about.
-MC
There's a terrible sadness in this world, we've all been there and are
soon going back "despite all the rage we are still just a rat in a cage"
