Subject: big wall opportunity
My Dear Fellow Climbers:
My name is Wang, tachi, a Taiwanese now studying in UW-Madison, also an old
climber who used to be a not-so-good climber in Taiwan. This letter concerns
a possible opportunity for some big walls in China. If you are interested,
please get in contact with me. Or, if you know someone who may be
interested, please let them know the following message.
One of my American friend sent me this: "Todd Skinner just returned from
Hunan Province, scouting a big wall to climb. Sounds like they spotted
something worth doing. If you know of anyone in Taiwan that would like to
go with Todd as an interpreter/climber you should pass his/her name along.
The person won't get paid or anything but he or she might get some good
exposure to climbing. Can't guarantee anything but I can talk to Todd about
it."
Todd Skinner is a well known US climber in both traditional and sport genre.
He did the first free ascent of the Salathe, Yosemite, several years ago
(5.13 b), and just returned from Buffin Island where he also did some first
ascents on previously-unknown big walls. The one who sent me the note is Jim
Ratz who is a good friend of Skinner, and himself a diligent climber and now
owns a guide company in the Grand Teton area, USA. He came to Taiwan and
stayed one year in 1997. Some of your already-graduated members may still
remember him (and probably me as well).
In any event, I think this could be a great opportunity for you to get in
touch with some world top-notch climbers and an opportunity to learn from
them. As I might have to say, this invitation would not require that you
have to be a superb sport climber like, say, 5.12 or above. Big wall
climbing entails more knowledge, skills, strength, and mentality in the
traditional sense, than the physical-only ones of the sport climbing. This
is why I write to you. Your association is one that, to my knowledge, still
embraces such tradition.
I am not sure, however, what would become if you write to me and even if the
whole process starts to roll. Big wall climbing is just like expeditions. It
need a number of things to come together so that the final moves can
possibly ignite. But, if you are really interested, and if you can do, say,
5.10, and am familiar with what may be called the "system" -- let's say the
system mean everything that safely connect ropes to gears and human beings
-- please write to me and we will see what happens.
Regards.
Wang, ta-chi
