[分享]寫 PERSONAL STATEMENT的技巧

本人目前正在加州念社大

前一陣子才準備了很多申請UC需要的自傳什麼的

在這裡社大的轉學輔導真的很健全

讓我學到了不少經驗和技巧在這裡願意跟大家分享一下

希望對未來有需要的板友們都有點幫助

順便賺點P幣(之前亞錦都輸光了)

我覺得我之前在台灣花錢請的顧問(我是去哈佛那家顧問)

寫出來的自傳真的很普通

雖然英文本身是挺順的

但我覺得不夠有內容也不夠有邏輯性和說服力

我想這真的是最重要最重要的

以下是我上了一些PERSONAL STATEMENT WORKSHOP所得到的心得




既然是要申請美國的學校

寫的essay/SOP 之類的就要符合他們喜歡的調調

想像他們每天都要看數百篇的申請信

重點是如何顯示你和其他幾百人不同的地放在哪

有多用功?有多認真?  有誰會寫一篇自傳告訴他們我不認真不用功

重點就是"說服力"

那說服力的基本就是"證據"

並且用一些特別有趣的方式陳述出來

如果只是一大堆你做過的事都只是一些 general的描述

如果這些東西套用在任何人身上好像都可以通

那就代表你寫出的自傳不具有特色無法讓你 stand out

老師曾經建議我們如何在有限的字數裡去做最完整有趣的描述

如果一句話反過來說  是不可能被寫在自傳裡的話  就是廢話

ex:  打校隊~比賽的過程~讓我學到做人處事的道理

如果這段話缺乏following的證據去證明  讓essay更生動更有說服力

這句話瞬間變廢話  佔字數

對自己來說校隊很有意義  對看你文章的老師來說並沒有

因為你沒有說服他  也沒有引起他的興趣

再來就是英文迷思

我想這跟文化有一點差異

至少在我的教育環境下

我被要求文章是要用詞優美

起承轉和  富有美感

但是老美不一樣

他們要求直接 清楚

之前我申請ucla 和berkeley的時候

寫了一篇用詞優美的不得了花了我好多時間查自典的 essay

立刻被老師及雇問退貨

主因是因為我講了一大堆  卻沒有重點

我自己覺得很感人

不了解我的人卻不覺得

用了很多優美的形容詞去描述

卻缺乏證據

對老師來說  這不是一篇好的 essay

當然如果你申請的是英文系就令當別論啦(那個就是在我能力之外了)

所以

其實大家都有辦法寫好essay

不用擔心英文不夠好

只要清楚明瞭  重點是讓人能夠了解

再一次"說服力"是最重要的

UC personal statement tips


THE BASICS

*Choose a topic for each essay

*Write in a natural style
 -present your information and ideas in a focused thoughful and meaningful
  manner. Support your ideas with SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. A personal statement
  that is simply a list of qualities of accomplishments is usually not
  persuasive.

*Proofread


CONTENTE
The two prompts are: 以下是uc申請的格式 給你們當參考

1)What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject
  developed and describe any experience you have had in the field-such
  as volunteer work, interships and empolyment, participation in student
  organizations and activities-and what you have gained from your involvement

--This question seeks to understand your motivation and dedication to learning
  include imformation on any specialized programs you have participated in
  such as EOPS, Puente, TAP, etc by describing your involvement in the
  program and how you have benefited.

2)Tell us about a person quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or
  experience that is important to you. What about this quality or
  accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

--This question seeks to determine your academic or creative interests, and
  potential to contribute to the vitality of the UC. So discuss what makes
  you unique, how you changed through the year, how your sense of direction
  has solidified, etc. and how this will benefit the program

WHAT IS UC LOOKING FOR

*Thoughtful reflection
*SPECIFIC EXAMPLES, not vague responses. In other words, if you make a
 claim about a quality you possess. make sure you back up that claim with
 specific examples
*Personal qualities include, but are not limited to , intellectual curiosity,
 leadership, creativity, intiative, persistence, maturation, commitment
 to others, and ability to overcome hardship.
*Students who demonstrate tenacity, self-discipline and motivation for
 academic success
*Students who have demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for differences

我覺得上面的講的還挺清楚的

我再補充幾點我從workshop學來的

首先就是破題

你整段要講的是什麼要很清楚

但卻不要太無聊

切記不要restate 你的問題

如何讓你的開頭能夠吸引人繼續往下看

並且把它從千萬份申請中拿出來放旁邊

what is your intended major?

千萬不要回答 my intended major is..............

另外就是比起流水帳的描述

挑重點講的詳細又生動更好

做了公益  慕了多少錢  怎麼募到這麼多錢  過程和你的改變都可以

還有就是避免廢話
