THe following information was obtained from my advisor:
As of last Friday (1/28/2011), Gatech ChBE has sent out 50 admission letters.
There are 50 more to go!!
According to my advisor, the admission committee started the evaluation before
the admission deadline Feb 1st and had sent out admission to those who are
qualified. However, not necessary the best available one.
According to him, they made an offer to a student from U of Maryland with GPA
around 3.5 before the deadline, but rejected another student from the same
school with GPA around 3.7.
This is simply because the latter student application was
sent later than the former one.
So the moral of the story is apply early to show that you are really into
GRAD SCHOOL although that might not be the case.
This is how they perceive the late applicants. Grad school is their second
option because they do not receive a job offer. Job hunting season for
US universities is usually in late Fall and the job offers are usually made
in December or early Jan (at least for american universities).
