我覺得a place to live並沒有錯.

live意為"住"時, 的確是不及物動詞, 必須先接介係詞再接地點,

但因為我時常看到a place to live後面並沒有in的寫法,

因此在英英字典和BNC(British National Corpus)中查過,

我發現a place to live是完全正確的用法. 原po不妨參考:

Macmillan: http://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/live

例句: Paris is a nice place to live.

Longman: http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/live_1

例句: They've found a place to live.

另外原PO也可以在BNC(http://www.natcorp.ox.ac.uk/) 鍵入a place to live,

即可看到a place to live和a place to live in皆有人使用.

那麼"為何原為不及物動詞的live, 變成不定詞片語修飾前面的名詞(place)時,

竟然不需要加介係詞?"

這個問題需要分析大量的corpus, 並且請語言學家提出可能的解釋,

但至少我們可以確定的是, a place to live是正確無誤的.


另外"難道只有a place可以這樣連用, 如果將a place改成其他地點,

如a country, a city 還可以這樣使用嗎?"

我在BNC中鍵入"city to live", no results,

鍵入"country to live", 共四筆資料:

雖然所得筆數甚少, 但可看出live後面都有in

(第一筆資料語意難解, 此處的to live 似乎與我們討論的結構不同)

當然, 這只是小小的實驗而已, 建議有興趣的老師們可以用其他地點試試,

看看是否會得到類似的結果. 但從這個小實驗看來, 若名詞不是place,

不定詞片語中的live後面的確得接介係詞. 但這只是我的speculation,

還需要corpus來驗證了.
