Brett's appearance at the recent Meltdown Festival where he
performed as part of Annie Whitehead's "Soup Songs", a
tribute to the music of Robert Wyatt, was an astounding
success. Longtime Suede Fanclub member Ali Lush has penned a
few words for those of you who weren't able to attend (her
review will appear in full in the next Suede fanclub magazine).
About an hour into the show mobile sound units are wheeled on,
the lights are dimmed and Annie Whitehead announces "Brett
Anderson, Alex Lee and Tony Hoffer". Brett has brought his
own band with him, Alex looking solid and confident on guitar,
Tony hunched over his box of tricks like an eccentric scientist,
and, last as always, Brett, looking absolutely stunning, tanned,
fit and healthy with golden hair, plain black Tshirt and jeans.
As Brett saunters across the stage in his own inimitable way,
trying to get the level on the mic right, Tony and Alex set up
a hypnotic rhythmic groove and eventually Brett returns to the
mic and launches into 'Sea Song'. His voice is strong and
hard-edged, softening with the tender lines around "playing at
being human for a while..". They've done it on their own terms
again, as with 'Poor Little Rich Girl', turning a song with a
typically Suede theme into something of their own. It's a
magical performance, all the better for its simplicity, and all
too short. As the song ends Brett strides off the stage with a
brief wave, followed by Alex and Tony, to appreciative applause.
