[解題] 序數 + 名詞 + 不定詞 ?

某市面上英語教學雜誌六月號有這麼一句

Millet was the first Frech painter to show country life with dignity.

然後列了條規則，「序數 + 名詞 + 不定詞」

學生跑來問說，難道不可以說 Millet was the first French painter showing ...嗎?

我說可以，因為 to show是  the first painter who would show...的簡化
               showing是  the first painter who showed.......的簡化

端看情境需不需要那個modal auxiliary。

我這樣解釋是依據以前讀文法時對modal auxiliary的認識，

用Collins Cobuild的語料庫來查，都是不定詞的例子，
用google來查，有一些分詞的(當然google上面的不可盡信)

想請問有沒有老師有看過這種規則，謝謝。
