'The' means something particular, the talkers already know or just mentioned,
so you can say 'the cat is mine', not 'a cat'.
You can show a cat pic to the kids and ask 'What is this?' (This is a cat~)
'What's the cat doing?'
Show them the difference by vocal and visual ways, and practice more.
