The man who threw the bomb was arrested. (Not: *. . . the man throwing . . .)

如果大家仔細讀的話，Mr. Swan是這樣子寫的:

To express a non-progressive meaning, use a relative clause.
Ex 1: The boy who brings the milk has been ill.


Ex 1 只是一個使用"non-progressive meaning"的例子。Mr. Swan並
沒有在句子後頭加註(NOT ... The boy bringing the milk ...)。換
句話說 Mr. Swan 根本沒有說The boy bringing the milk ... 是錯的。

如果比較下面兩個句子的意思的話:
1. The boy who brings the milk has been ill.

這句主要是在說 "The boy"生病了，然後關係子句的部分只是一個
一般性的敘述 -- 敘述的是
  a: 這男孩的工作 (也許是每天brings the milk，也許是一個禮拜的
     某些天等等)
  b: 然後用這來指明一個特定的男孩 -- 是brings the milk的那個
     男孩病了，不是送報紙來的那個，也不是送雜貨的那個

  c: 有可能是說話的人剛好想到這男孩，所以提一下。說話的人未必
     有看到這男孩，或是這人說話當時可能不是這男孩brings the
     milk的時候

2. The boy bringing the milk has been ill.
這意思可以是(我只單獨挑用於表達 progressive 意思的用法，其它
可能用法我略掉不提)(Mr. Swan用的字眼是"usually" -- 表示還有
其它用法) --
  a: 就在這男孩"正在bringing the milk"(He is bringing the milk)
     的那當時 -AND-
  b: 說話的人也許正在這時候看到這男孩，於是提了一下他的健康
     狀況

像書上最後的這個例子Mr.Swan就很明白的為"...than man
throwing..."加註"NOT" :

The man who threw the bomb was arrested. (Not: *. . . the man throwing . . .)

至於後面的"NOT"為何不行就留給大家想像了

因為有人問過類似的問題，所以我另外提一下
"Practical English Usage"裡頭這樣子的寫法很多，
所以除非Mr.Swan 很清楚的說了某寫法不行，或是直接的標明了
"NOT"然後把錯誤寫法cross掉(*1)，不然的話不要直接的認為某
"想當然爾"的句子/寫法就是錯的 -- 總之他書裡例句前後的註解
很重要，真的要讀清楚


(*1) 我本來有寫些例外狀況，但是想想還是去掉。最重要的是
--> 他書裡例句前後.....(上頭寫了)

另外就是會來這版的絕大多數是英文老師，我相信老師們應該
有足夠的能力自我判定，所以我就不多言了
