2) Tom is taller than everyone else in his class.

Sentence 1 asks you to imagine a number of separate two-way comparisons
between Tom and one classmate at a time.

Sentence 2 asks you to imagine a multi-way comparison of the whole class
at once.

But the result is the same.*
