※ 引述《jumpgod (jumpgod)》之銘言: : 四、限定和非限定用法 : The boy who is running there is my brother.----- 限定用法 : The boy , who is running there, is my brother.----- 非限定用法(補述用法) : 補充說明先行詞the boy : My sister who is a nurse is good at playing the piano. ----- 限定用法 : My sister, who is a nurse, is good at playing the piano. 謝謝大家 http://www.worldwidewords.org/articles/which.htm 站主 Michael Quinion 是個作家、英語字典編者以及某些字典的編輯群之一 ----------------------------- * Restrictive clauses are introduced by that and are not separated from the rest of the sentence by commas. * Non-restrictive clauses are introduced by which and must be separated by commas* from the rest of the sentence to indicate parenthesis. * (My notes, not Michael Quinion's) Commas: Two commas -- one in the beginning, the other in the end. But you may find only one comma when the non-restrictive clause is attached at the end of the sentence. eg. The credit card is in my wallet, which you can find in the kitchen drawer. ----------------------------- The house that is painted pink has just been sold. The house, which is painted pink, has just been sold. In the first one, the clause "that is painted pink" is a restrictive clause, because it limits the scope of the word "house", indicating that the writer doesn't mean any house, only the one that has been painted in that particular colour; if he takes that clause out, all that's left is The house has just been sold: the reader no longer knows which house is being referred to and the sentence loses some crucial information 第一句的 that is painted pink 限制了 house, 意即 不是隨隨便便某一棟,而是漆成粉紅色的那一棟, 如果移除子句,讀者就不知道到底在講哪間,句子的重點也不見了。 In the second example the clause is non-restrictive: the writer is giving additional information about a house he's describing; the clause which is painted pink is here parenthetical — the writer is saying "by the way, the house is painted pink" as an additional bit of information that's not essential to the meaning and could be taken out. ============= FYR I suggest people who are interested read the rest part on that page.
