Although most counselors are ethical, occasional situations arise in which
such is not the case. In these circumstances, counselors must take some
action. Otherwise, by condoning or ignoring a situation they risk eroding
their own sense of moral selfhood and find it easier to condone future
ethical breaches, a phenomenon known as the "slippery slope effect."
