查了一下英語用法指南
一般我們教學生時似乎都是照著文法書上的寫法教
如 in/at/on which = where ; for which = why ; in/at/on which = when ;
in/by which = how
而在活用圖解英文法中，關於這部份的例句如下：
I know the time when (= at which) he will come.
This is the place where (= in which) I was born.
This is the reason why (= for which) he cannot come today.
在這些例句之後，書上有個附註
以上各句的先行詞 the time, the place, the reason 皆可省略
易言之，一般在使用如 where, why, when 這幾個關係副詞時，也可以將先行詞省略
而在英語用法指南的書裏，它所列出的例句方法，和活用圖解有些不同
請見它所列出的例句及說明：
在指時間和地點的名詞後面的關係從句，可以由 when 和 where 來引導，
與介詞 + which 的用法相同
I'll never forget the day when I first met you. (= ...the day on which...)
Do you know a shop where I can find sandals? (= ...a shop at which...)
Do you know the reason why she doesn't like me? (= ...the reason for which...)
如果您有注意到的話應該會發現，雖然說關係副詞 = 介系詞 + 關係代名詞
但是在這些例句中，它們的用法和介詞+關係代名詞是相同的
只是這幾個關係副詞的先行詞可省略亦可不省略
省略之後就由形容詞子句變為名詞子句
而在不省略的時候，where是可以當作關係代名詞來用的
因而您所舉的例句 This is the place where I come from.
the place where = where = from where
是在較口語時，將where用作是關係代名詞了
再舉一個例子
China is the birthplace of kites, from where kite-flying spread to Korea,
Japan, Thailand and India. (此例句出自英文文法分類題庫）
因此此句中的from where = from which = from which place
甚至是when也偶爾會用作關代
