在Practical English Usage P441.4有提到：
4  distributive use: She told them to open their books, etc
After a plural possessive, we do not normally use a singular noun in the sense
of "one each".
（在複數所有格之後，正常來說，我們不會用單數名詞來表示"一人一個"之意）
   The teacher told the children to open their books.

所以如果用單數，變成全部的猩猩都只有一個媽媽（主詞為複數代稱全體），這不可能。
所以應該選複數。國中課文康軒第二冊第八課閱讀篇也有一個句子：
Our bodies need fruit and vegetables.
