Serena and Venus Williams' father details Indian Wells incident in new book

In his forthcoming book, Richard Williams asserts in vivid terms that he and
his daughters Venus and Serena were attacked with racist venom from the
mostly white crowd at the tournament at Indian Wells, Calif., in 2001.

In “Black and White: The Way I See it” (Atria Books), Williams again calls
it a day that “disgraced America.”

He writes:
The chorus of boos that cascaded through the stadium sent a powerful
message to America, to Venus, to Serena, and to me. It was a message from the
past, one America tries to put behind it but can never forget. It was a
snapshot from the days when the open humiliation of the black race was
accepted without question. Accusations and racial epithets flew through the
stadium.

The book, due out on May 6 and co-authored by Bart Davis, will do little to
quell the 13-year-old controversy or diminish Williams’ reputation as a
polarizing figure.

The episode began when Serena and Venus Williams were slated to meet in the
2001 Indian Wells semifinals. A few minutes before the match, Venus withdrew
and fans booed them.

Some media and players speculated that Williams was orchestrating the pullout
so that his daughters would not have to face off, but Williams writes that

In the final, Serena received a mix of cheers and jeers but went on to win
against Kim Clijsters.

When Venus and her father walked to their seats, they were met with a mix of
boos and heckles. Williams has always maintained he heard racial insults
directed at him, many of which he recalls with excruciating detail in the
book.

Venus and Serena vowed they would never return. They have not, despite fines

on the event have painted a more nuanced picture, notably Joel Drucker in a

In January, Serena stoked prospects that she might return to Indian Wells
when she made conciliatory comments at the Australian Open and then left her
name on the tournament’s entry list – a departure from previous years.

She eventually removed her name and has been largely silent on the topic
despite comments from her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, that she had considered
