Las Vegas Ballpark will host the Athletics this week for a six-game
homestand. The stadium is normally home to the Las Vegas Aviators - the AAA
affiliate of the Athletics within the Pacific Coast League. L
as Vegas sits
2,000 feet above sea level, which would rank 2nd among active MLB parks. It's
still 3,200 feet below Coors Field (#1) but about 900 feet higher than Chase
Field (#2). Higher altitude is associated with thinner air, which allows the
ball to carry farther. It can also reduce pitch movement, leading to
straighter pitches that are easier for hitters to square up and put in play.
The venue figures to be highly susceptible to wind as the open-air
architecture is similar to that of Sutter Health Park (the Athletics usual
home field). The outfield at Las Vegas Ballpark is larger than the typical
MLB standard, presumably to account for the higher altitude and increased fly
ball distance. The field measures 340' down the lines, 380' to each gap, and
415' to center. Most of the left side is guarded by a 13-foot-tall fence.
