Bookie says Ippei Mizuhara's gambling addiction was clear early on

The bookie for Ippei Mizuhara, who admitted to stealing millions from Shohei
Ohtani, said in an interview with ESPN that the former interpreter for the
Los Angeles Dodgers star showed signs of problem gambling within 30 days of
betting with him.

向大谷翔平竊取數百萬美元並認罪的水原一平所對應的組頭在接受 ESPN 採訪時表示，這
位 洛杉磯道奇隊 前翻譯，在開始向他下注後不到 30 天，就已經出現了賭博成癮的明顯
徵兆。


"He was absolutely bananas, the amount of bets he was making," Mathew Bowyer
said in a new episode of "The Betrayal of Shohei Ohtani" released Tuesday.

「他簡直瘋了，下注的次數多到不可思議。」


"He was trying to dig out a hole, and that hole made him even more poor of a
gambler because he's betting big payout stuff."

「他一直想把自己從債務的深坑裡挖出來，但那個坑反而讓他變成更糟糕的賭徒，因為他
不停去押那些高賠率、高回報的賭注。」



But the U.S. Attorney who prosecuted Mizuhara's case told ESPN he did not
believe Mizuhara's actions could solely be explained by his gambling
addiction.

不過，負責起訴水原的 美國聯邦檢察官（U.S. Attorney） 接受 ESPN 採訪時表示，他並
不認為水原的行為能單純以賭博成癮來解釋。


"I am not convinced he was just a gambling addict and had no choice," said E.
Martín Estrada, former U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California.
"I think it's more he got this great opportunity, but then he saw a bigger
opportunity to enrich himself and took advantage of that opportunity."


曾任 加州中區（Central District of California）美國聯邦檢察官（U.S. Attorney
） 的 E. Martín Estrada 表示：
「我不相信他只是個賭博成癮者，沒有其他選擇。我認為更大的原因是，他獲得了一個絕
佳的機會，但隨後又看見一個能讓自己更加富有的機會，於是利用了這個機會。」


Mizuhara admitted to stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani to pay off his
gambling debts to Bowyer. The bookie said he recognized Mizuhara's behavior
because he himself is a compulsive gambler, but the interpreter's betting
still surprised him.

水原承認從大谷翔平竊取近 1,700 萬美元，用來償還欠 Bowyer 的賭債。Bowyer 表示，
由於自己本身也是一名強迫性賭徒，因此能辨認出水原的行為模式，但這位翻譯的下注方
式仍然讓他感到震驚。


"Listen, I gambled bigger than most, right? I sleep, you know, I have a life
too. He definitely was betting all night long, all the time," Bowyer said.
"I've never seen anything like it."

Bowyer 說：
「聽著，我下注的金額已經比大多數人大得多了，對吧？但我還是要睡覺，我也有自己的
生活。他真的整晚都在下注，幾乎無時無刻都在下注。」「我從來沒有見過這種情況。」


Mizuhara pleaded guilty to bank fraud and filing a false tax return and is
serving a 57-month prison sentence at a low-security federal prison in
central Pennsylvania. He will be eligible for parole in 2029. Bowyer pleaded
guilty to money laundering, running an illegal gambling business and filing a
false tax return. He served seven months of a yearlong sentence and was
released from federal custody in May.

水原對銀行詐欺及提交虛假報稅資料認罪，目前正在 賓夕法尼亞州中部（central
Pennsylvania） 一所低度戒備聯邦監獄（low-security federal prison）服刑，刑期 57
 個月，預計將於 2029 年具備假釋資格。
Bowyer 則對洗錢、經營非法賭博事業以及提交虛假報稅資料認罪。他原本被判一年徒刑
，服刑七個月後，已於今年 5 月獲釋。

後面在講州政府給的處罰、組頭Bowyer怎麼洗錢等就略過了。
