Riley Greene wants Team USA, but Puerto Rico is only path to 2026 WBC

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene has not committed to playing in the 2026
World Baseball Classic.

He wants to compete for Team USA, considering he led the United States to a gold
 medal in the 2018 COPABE Pan-American Championships on the 18-and-under nationa
l team, but his only path to the 2026 WBC runs through Team Puerto Rico.

s. "I've shot him a text. He's on our [provisional] roster, and if he wants to p
articipate, he will be more than welcome.


But Team USA isn't calling Greene.

"Riley is another left-handed bat, so we've talked about providing a balanced
roster – not overly left-handed or right-handed," Michael Hill, the general man
ager of Team USA who also works as MLB's senior vice president of on-field opera
tions, said Dec. 9 at the Winter Meetings. "He's definitely been a name under co
nsideration, but we want to make sure we're balanced. We're looking more right-h
anded at this point as we go forward."
