Don't expect Jays' Donaldson to return any time soon

Though he’s eligible to be sprung from the disabled list on Saturday, don’t
expect to see Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson any time soon.

In Florida to recover from his shoulder inflammation, Donaldson is expected
to begin throwing sometime this week, but his return to the Jays lineup is
far from determined.

The best guess is that Donaldson will be out at least another 10 days or
possibly even noticeably longer than that.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons acknowledged on Wednesday that the shoulder
inflammation had started to bother Donaldson during at bats.

While the injury isn’t considered to be serious and unless it worsens is not
expected to keep Donaldson out of the lineup for long, there are concerns
beyond the minor ailment itself.

First up is rest and recovery, which is what Donaldson has been doing since
he went to Florida last Friday.

Once Donaldson starts throwing, he’ll be monitored by the team’s training
staff in Florida to make sure there is progression at a safe and comfortable
pace free of setbacks.

The throwing program Donaldson will include as much simulation to game
situations. There’s also a psychological component to the process as
Donaldson is determined to feel as close to 100% physically as he can before
playing.

Add it all up and it is expected that it will be at least 10 more days before
Donaldson returns to action.
