Braves land reliever Chris Martin from Rangers
WASHINGTON -- Having spent the past two months as one of baseball’s most
effective relievers,
Chris Martin will now take advantage of the chance to
solidify the Braves' bullpen.
Atlanta took a step toward satisfying one of its most pressing needs on
Tuesday night, when it acquired Martin from the Rangers in exchange for
Kolby
Allard.
Martin has posted a 3.08 ERA over 38 appearances this year. The 33-year-old
reliever has produced a 1.45 ERA and limited opponents to a .228 on-base
percentage while recording 24 strikeouts and issuing just one walk over 18
2/3 innings (19 appearances) since May 24.
The Braves may attempt add at least one more reliever before Wednesday’s 4
p.m. ET Trade Deadline. They are also evaluating the possibility of adding a
starting pitcher and a right-handed-hitting outfielder.
Allard was one of the game’s top prospects after the Braves selected him
with the 14th overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft. But the young left-hander’
s stock has dropped over the past two seasons. He produced a 4.17 ERA in 20
starts for Triple-A Gwinnett this year.
