WALTHAM, Mass. - The Boston Celtics hit the court at their training facility T
uesday afternoon for one final practice before discovering their postseason fa
te.

One game remains for fifth-placed Boston: A must-win showdown against the four
th-placed Miami Heat Wednesday night at TD Garden.

The season finale between those two teams will likely be the determining facto
r of whether or not the C's clinch home court for the first round of the Playo
ffs. Securing that advantage is certainly the goal for Boston's coaching staff
and players.

"We'll do everything we can to control that and it starts with a win tomorrow,
" said Isaiah Thomas after swishing a few warm-up shots ahead of practice. "Ho
pefully we can get fourth place and have home court in the first round because
it will definitely help us."

Added teammate Jae Crowder, "It's important because we worked so hard. We put

e. Atlanta is currently holding onto third place with a 48-33 record, Miami is

The highest Playoff seed the Celtics can obtain is No. 4, and depending on Eas
tern Conference results over the next couple of days, they could potentially d

Though just one game remains for the C's, there are six different scenarios th
at can determine their seeding. Brad Stevens was handed a layout of those poss
ibilities before practice, and that sheet certainly raised an eyebrow in confu
sion as he scanned over them.

"Somebody just put on my desk all the scenarios and I said, 'Do you mind throw
ing that away?'" Stevens recounted with a slight smile. "It's a headache to ev
en try to figure out."

Considering the mindset of this Celtics team, perhaps it's fitting that the ab
ove list has been mentally trashed as the C's head into their final contest.

This is a squad that plays one game at a time and one possession at a time, wi
th the mentality that it should only focus on what it can control.

"I'm not going to concern myself with things I can't control," explained Steve
ns. "I think no matter what in the Playoffs you can't be a dud on the road and
expect to win a Playoff series. And you can't be good but inconsistent at hom
e and expect to win a Playoff series. You just have to play well in the games
that you have."

Boston has not done so in its last two games, falling at the hands of Atlanta
Saturday night and Charlotte Monday night. Those losses may fuel the C's as th
ey take the parquet floor one more time to close out the regular season. After
that, they will embrace any opponent at any location during the first round o
f the postseason.

"Our team, as bitter a taste as we may feel from last night, has put ourselves
in a great position all year with their play," said Stevens. "These guys have
really done a lot of good things and we look forward to playing whoever we pl
ay, wherever we play when that time comes."

Obtaining home court advantage certainly is a goal of Boston's, as Thomas and
Crowder previously explained. At the same time, they agree that it's not a com
plete necessity to experience postseason success.

"At the end of the day, you still have to go and win games on someone else's c
ourt," said Crowder. "That's what the postseason is all about. Of course we wa
nt to start the postseason off at home, but it's not the end of the world if w
e don't. We'll go handle our business and try to put together a good series an
d try to take care of business that way."

Jae說
First, Boston must handle one final regular-season task, one that will likely
determine its postseason fate in regard to its first-round opponent and Game 1
location.
